Have a 3D configurator built or choose off-the-shelf software?
Off-the-shelf configurator software is live sooner and cheaper with a simple range. Having one built wins as soon as your product deviates from the template, you need high image quality, or you do not want to depend on a licence. In the view of THE REAL MAG., the heart of the choice is not the price but the question of who owns the end result.
The trade-off in one table
| Off-the-shelf platform | Having one built | |
|---|---|---|
| Live within | days to weeks | six to ten weeks |
| Initial cost | low, often just a subscription | one-off from 5,000 euros |
| Ongoing cost | licence, often per product or per user | fixed monthly amount, with us from 150 euros |
| Image quality | limited by what a phone can handle | limited by your source data |
| If your product deviates | you get stuck | it gets built as it is |
| Ownership | you rent | you own the result |
| Stopping | the configurator disappears | the configurator stays |
When a standard platform is the right choice
There is a real scenario in which you should not want anything bespoke. If your product fits the template, your range is manageable and you mainly want to validate quickly whether customers configure at all, then an existing platform is the sensible move. You are live within a few weeks at a low starting cost, and you learn whether the concept works before you invest seriously.
THE REAL MAG. recommends that too when that is the situation. A configurator nobody uses is expensive, however it was built.
Where standard platforms run aground
Three things keep coming back.
The template. Platforms are built around an assumption about how products are put together, a base with options on top. Products where one choice changes the shape of the whole product, or where there are dependencies between components, fit that badly. You only notice when you are halfway.
Image quality. Almost every platform renders in the visitor's browser. That means your 3D model has to be simplified until it runs on an average phone. Precisely the detail you wanted 3D for is what gets lost. THE REAL MAG. does not take that step. The heavy computing happens on our servers, so the quality of your source data stays decisive rather than your customer's device. We cover that architectural choice in detail in the article on rendering in the browser or on the server.
The exit costs. This is the item that is forgotten most often. After two years your product data, your configuration logic and your 3D models are in somebody else's system. Stopping means starting over. So ask before you sign whether you get your 3D models in a usable format, and whether you can export the configuration rules.
The sums over three years
Comparing on the purchase price gives a distorted picture, because the cost structure differs. A platform has low starting costs and ongoing licences that often scale with your range or your traffic. A built configurator has high starting costs and a fixed amount after that.
For the levels THE REAL MAG. offers, that looks like this, with twelve 3D models and one connection.
| Year 1 | Year 2 | Year 3 | Total | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Built, Gold level | 12,900 euros | 3,600 euros | 3,600 euros | 20,100 euros |
| Built, Silver level | 9,600 euros | 1,800 euros | 1,800 euros | 13,200 euros |
What the platform column comes to depends entirely on that supplier's licence model. Put it alongside yourself, and ask whether the licence scales up if your range or your traffic doubles. If the answer is yes, the three-year comparison changes considerably.
The decision rule
Choose a standard platform if your product fits the template, you mainly need speed, and you are willing to start over later.
Have one built if at least one of these three applies. Your product does not fit a standard structure, image quality is a selling point in your market, or you do not want a supplier standing between you and your customer data.
In doubt, start small with a built configurator for your best-selling products rather than big with a platform for everything. Extending modularly is cheaper than migrating.
Frequently asked questions
Is off-the-shelf configurator software cheaper?
In the first year, usually yes. Over several years that shifts, because licence costs continue and can rise per user or per product, while a configurator built by THE REAL MAG. keeps a fixed monthly amount.
What happens if I stop using a configurator platform?
With most platforms you lose the configurator, and sometimes the product data you built up as well. Always ask in advance whether you can take the 3D models and the configuration logic with you in a usable format.
Can a standard platform deliver photorealistic quality?
Only up to a point. Platforms generally render in the browser, which means your 3D models are simplified to run on phones. High image quality requires rendering on a server.
How long does each of the two take?
A standard platform can be standing within days if your range fits the template. A configurator built by THE REAL MAG. has a demo inside a week and full delivery in six to ten weeks.
